Twinkie, the Underdog

$690 of $2,000 raised

Update – 9/13

Twinkie has the official ‘All Clear’ from his amazing vet and is now officially available for adoption. His skin has healed beautifully, and while he may always need sun protection and jackets to protect his delicate skin, he has LOVED being able to go outside and play in the woods and the lakes. He has also made great strides in his weight loss and is getting spunkier by the day. Thanks to all who made this sweet deserving pups surgery possible!

Update – 8/27

Twinkie is healing and is doing so well, considering! He is making improvements, healing, and getting healthier each day. He still has a fairly large hole that is actually working as a drain. Fortunately, our check-ups with our vet have confirmed it IS actually working to his benefit, and currently helping the overall damage to heal nicely. He is overall doing really well, we will keep you updated on his progress!

Thanks to everyone who donated to help us get this literal life-saving surgery- we appreciate your generosity!

Our volunteers gravitate towards the underdog, in almost all situations. Twinkie’s story is a perfect example of our commitment to the ones who are at the greatest risk for euthanasia with many unknown factors.

This poor boy landed himself in a rural Utah shelter after biting his finder when he was trying to catch him. The shelter immediately recognized something was wrong, why would this sweet boy bite? Upon further inspection, they found he was actually in an unimaginable amount of pain, hiding it as dogs do. They rushed him to a vet and found a horrendous injury lurking below mounds of matted hair.

A careful but quick shave down of his lower body/back area revealed a horrible, necrotic (dead tissue) area that was huge, life-threatening, and only getting worse. We are unsure what caused the damage, but it’s possible that a large, wild animal attacked him (whoa!).

Once we understood the magnitude of his injury, we worked quickly to get him into emergency surgery. This is a risky surgery because so much area was already dead and now spreading. The surgeon removed the dead and dying tissue and carefully stretch surrounding tissue to cover the massive area that was removed- we hope it will heal well. This emergency surgery, the post-op care, and the days ahead will run us into the $2000 range.

Emergency surgeries like this, where we act immediately, are only possible when we have support and donations to cover the costs. Please consider helping us to get Twinkie well and on the road to his happily-ever-after by making a donation TODAY!

Many Thanks- The CAWS Team
