Portobello

$1,370 of $3,000 raised

UPDATE – 4/3

We found out earlier this week that Portobello did have distemper. She fought hard, but it was too much for her little body, especially with everything else she had going on. Her foster mom got to hold her and love her as we let her go.
We also learned that the rest of the litter is Ehrlichia negative (tick disease) but is Coccidia positive (fecal parasite). Mama Quinn is Ehrlichia positive and everyone has started treatment for those ailments.
This has been an incredibly difficult litter and we so appreciate all the support from our wonderful donors.
Run free, Snoopy Girl.

UPDATE – 3/25

Yesterday, Portobello decided she was up to eating on her own, so she got to come home! She definitely isn’t back to a typical rambunctious puppy yet, but she’s made massive progress since Sunday. We are currently treating with 5 different medications, plus supportive fluids, warm compresses, and lots of love. Her foster has never been so excited to see a solid poop! In a few days, we will have the results of the Distemper test on her and the Ehrlichia tests on her mom and siblings so treatments can begin.

Thank you so much to our wonderful donors. We don’t have a total cost yet, but it is certainly over the $2,000 mark for Portobello alone.

Portobello should begin the search for her forever family, but instead, she’s fighting for her life at the emergency vet. It’s been a hard month for the CAWS pups and this one might be the worst yet.
At the worst, it’s distemper. At the best, it’s pneumonia and Ehrlichia, a tick disease that would have been passed to her in utero.
Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that is most often fatal. We won’t have a sure answer for a few days, so little Portobello (or Snoopy, as her foster affectionately calls her) will be spending this time with supportive, round-the-clock care at the emergency vet.
Portobello also has 7 littermates and her mama that are currently seemingly healthy, but we are preparing for the cruel fate of distemper if needed. We will also test all of them for Ehrlichia and treating if necessary. Portobello’s care is already estimated at $2,000-3,000, and each of the puppies will need $100 in care if they are Ehrlichia positive.
Every dollar counts and we are so thankful to our generous donors who help us act quickly when something is wrong with the animals in our care.
Much love,
Portobello, the Mushroom pups, their mama Quinn, and the CAWS team.
Thank you to all of Portobello’s kind donors:
